REVIEW: Sony Xperia U, Economical Class of NXT Series

Friday, July 13, 20120 comments

Since leaving the name of Ericsson, Sony has introduced its first smartphone series called NXT Series. Xperia S which has the most superior specifications among others is the first launched. This time Xperia U arrived in our newsroom and ready to cover. This Smartphone is the most economical product in the line of NXT Series, but make no mistake, Xperia U has a number of features that do not even have Xperia P and Xperia S which is actually more expensive. What is it?

Design

Dimensions: 112 x 54 x 12 mm, 110 grams; full touchscreen; plastic material with rubber coating and scratch-resistant glass coating; 3.5 mm audio port; the power / lock, volume rocker, shutter button; mic hole; microUSB port (around mobile from the upper side) .3 capacitive buttons below the screen (back, home and menu)
NXT series has its own characteristics, wherein the third in this series smartphones (Xperia S, P and U) are the dominant share similarities in design. All are designed with an arch box on the back side and has a firm corners. The most visible difference lies in the dimension where of course the Xperia U most compact size.

Privileged Xperia U than S and P also lies in the design. Wherein the transparent heritage Xperia Pureness can give off light whose color changes according to the dominant color on the screen. Most of the bottom (bottom cap) located after the transparent area can be open to be replaced with another color. In the sales package we received, there is a black bottom cap (attached) and white colors.

Display

The touch screen LED-backlit LCD capacitive, 16 million colors, 480 x 854 pixels, 3.5 inches (~ 280 ppi pixel density), multi touch, Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine
For middle-class smartphone, the screen Xperia U has a good level of pixel density. Moreover, unlike some other Sony smartphone, Xperia U also features Mobile Bravia Engine which can improve image quality when displaying images or video. Xperia U screen response is also quite good.

Operating System and UI

Android OS, v2.3.7 (gingerbread), Timescape UI
Sony promised update to Ice Cream Sandwich for NXT series, while waiting for a new version the user can only satisfied with a version of the Gingerbread. Display Interface Xperia U certainly has many similarities with the Xperia U because it uses Sony's Timescape UI with the same version as well.

A number of typical attractive Timescape UI widgets are also available by default on the homescreen panels. No less interesting is the overview display which can be accessed by pinching the screen (pinch) while on the homescreen. Unlike HTC's leapview which only displays squares representing the homescreen panels, Sony's overview display widgets on the homescreen with a floating effect. By touching one of the widgets users directly brought to the panel homescreen widget is installed.

Hardware

Dual-core processor 1 GHz, STE U8500 chipset, DB8500 GPU, RAM: 512 MB RAM, Internal Storage: 4 GB user available, 1320mAh battery
Xperia U is equipped with dual-core processors. It becomes special because of the range for the same price, some competitor products still rely on a single core processor (single core).

But in the kitchen sector runway, Xperia U also have a deficiency which the smartphone only has room for 4 GB of external storage only. Moreover, the smartphone does not have a microSD slot for adding an external memory.

Internet and Connectivity

GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps; Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Wi-Fi hotspot, DLNA; Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, EDR; microUSB v2.0, USB On-the-go support ; Browser Features: Multi-tabs, Flash player, HTML5, bookmarks, history, downloads, pinch zoom, print, share page.
High-speed mobile data connectivity would be obtained on the Xperia U that comes into the category of middle-class smartphone. Also available is also the option to connect to the internet wifi.

As previously discussed storage memory Xperia U bear but it did seem there are ways to outsmart, by connecting the Xperia U with a flash because this smartphone supports USB on the go.

Camera

5 MP, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, LED flash, Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, 3D sweep panorama, image stabilization, VGA secondary camera; video recorder 720p @ 30fps, video light
In the NXT series, Xperia U has a maximum resolution of the lowest camera but still on par with competitors in its class smartphone.

There are interesting to view camera interface Xperia U. 4 icons on the right side of the settings can be customized by way of reduced or replaced with other, more options are needed.

There are also features Multi-Angle Sweep is taking the picture is made as a 3D sweep panorama mode that had already been known, but produces a more attractive image. Users can tilt the phone to the left or right to see the object at a different angle.

Camera Results

The cameras Xperia U can capture images with good lighting even in unfavorable conditions. Not to mention the LED flash is ready to give assistance when needed.

Benchmark

Application used: Quadrant Standard Edition by Aurora Softwork and Antutu Benchmark V2.8 by Antutu
Using the latest version of the Benchmark Antutu, Xperia U gain value is above 4403 and HTC Evo 3D. While the Quadrant Standard Edition, this smartphone got a score of 2210 which put him under the LG Optimus 2X.

Conclusion

Compared to the smartphone from Sony's new NXT series, Xperia U is inferior in various sectors ranging from screen size, storage space, up to the most important in the hardware specifications. But the interesting part of this NXT series, Sony provides the advantages of each product. Xperia U for example, despite having the cheapest price tag, this smartphone has its own advantages which the user can replace the bottom cap to suit your mood, and ornaments that can change color transparent so it looks attractive.
